The unofficial variants of the competition – scramble, ambrose or grinsome – are no less famous. And other types, such as patsom, strings, chapman, skins or flag tournaments, are quite popular and widespread.

How are they different?

  • In a scramble, each member of a team of 2, 3, or 4 players takes the first shot on each hole. The best score is determined by the athletes themselves and continue the game at the point where the ball was the best participant. A variation of this format is the Texas Scramble, in which both teams and individuals win.
  • Ambrose is similar to scrambles, but with a handicap and net score. To establish the group’s “net” score, a team handicap is subtracted from the total score, which is determined by the formula: the sum of the handicaps of all team members divided by twice the number of athletes.
  • Skins is a variant of match play in which each hole has a predetermined number of points or a certain amount of money per hole. In order to get this “prize”, you need to show the best result on the hole. In the case when two or more players show the same maximum score, points and money are transferred to the next hole. And so until the end of the game. If in the final round, if several participants have the same amount of points, there is a replay.
  • Greensome is a variation of forsom, in which both players on each team perform a stroke from the tee, then chooses the best result in duets. Competitors whose ball was the worst perform all of the next even and odd shots on that hole, respectively.
  • Patsom is a combination of formats. Of the 18 holes, the first 6 are foreball, the second 6 are greensomes, and the final 6 are forsomes.
  • Chapman, aka Pinehurst, is a variation of foreball in which both players on a team hit a tee shot with one ball, then change positions and hit the other ball. After choosing one ball to play the entire round, they determine their position and take turns hitting before rolling into the hole.

Each golf format has its own rules and penalties for infractions.

In the competition with the counting of points, the winner is the athlete who played a predetermined round with the minimum number of strokes. When handicap is taken into account, the contestant with the lowest “net” score obtained during the round is the best.

Stroke Play Formats
In competitions on the score there are three types: bogey, par and stableford. Scoring in the first two types is conducted as in match play – by the holes passed. Each of the holes, on which the participant did not show the desired result is recognized as lost. In the end, the athlete who has passed the maximum number of holes with a positive result wins.

In the Stableford format, the player with the highest score wins. The scoring is done as follows:

  • A contestant who hits the ball two or more times higher than par gets 0 points.
  • At one “extra” hit the athlete receives 1 point.
  • The player who showed the result equal to the pair, assigns himself 2 points.
  • If a participant has coped in one stroke less than pairs, he gets 3 points.

And so on in ascending order: the less strokes it took the athlete on the hole, the more points he earns.

This version of the game is a tournament between two teams, which takes place during a predetermined round. Points are scored by hole, which means that the team that has hit the ball with the fewest strokes wins. If, at the end of the game, one team has more holes won than they have left on the course, they are considered the winner. In this case, the position of the teams is determined on the basis of the number of holes passed and not passed. A position in which one of the teams has a preponderance equal to the remaining holes is called a dormy. If the game is played with a handicap, the team with the lowest net score wins.

Types of match play
There are several formats in match play:

  • Single – A single match in which two players compete against each other.
  • Trisom is a variant of match play in which one athlete plays against two using a single ball.
  • Forsom is a variation of match play in which the game is played 2/2 with one ball and the shots are alternated.
  • Tribal – a variation in which three competitors play a match against each other. At the same time, each of the athletes plays two games with his one ball.
  • Bestball is a game format in which one athlete tries to outscore the best of two or three players.
  • Forball is a type of match play in which the game is played in a 2 on 2 format and the winner is determined based on the best scores.

These varieties of golf are categorized as official.
